Royal Caribbean International’s fleet of 14 cruise ships have embarked on a multi-million dollar renovation that will upgrade onboard facilities for individuals with disabilities. The three-year program will provide all Royal Caribbean ships with:

  • Staterooms with 32- to 34-inch doors, ramped bathrooms, roll-in showers, grab bars, raised toilet seats, lowered sinks and vanity areas, and a five-foot turning radius in sleeping areas, bathrooms, and sitting areas;
  • Wide corridors, special pool lifts, and ramps in terraced public areas;
  • Braille on menus, cabin doors, service directories, and elevator buttons;
  • Portable kits for the hearing impaired that include text telephone/telecommunication device for the deaf, altertmaster, and a strobe alarm;
  • Closed-captioned televisions, amplified telephones in staterooms and public areas, and infrared systems.
  • In addition, guests with disabilities are provided with such extra services as early boarding orientation and a sign language interpreter. And Royal Caribbean is also equipping ships that sail to the Caribbean and Hawaii with lifts that will make it easier for physically challenged guests to board tender boats. For more information on the cruise line’s disability programs, contact the access desk at 800-722-5472, extension 34492.
